Another gig to look out for shows one of my favourite live acts around today. Hexstatic shows are incredible not just for the constantly innovative and, well, downright whoopee music but also for the awe-inspiring visuals that they create on stage.
Mixing film and images live while they mix tunes make them the best mixing combo this side of Kenwood.
To mark the release of their new album, Trailer Trax, the duo will be playing a special live show at Cargo on the 13th May.
Be absolutely blown off your dancing feet for less than a tenner.

The Tennessee Three
The term Leg End is thrown around these days as though it were a yo-yo given to an ambitious and tenacious child attempting to learn 'Around The World'.
Fortunately, we'd be on safe ground were we to apply the term to The Man In Black. No, not Will Smith or, indeed, Tommy Lee Jones. I'm talking Cash. Johnny Cash.
The one and only band he worked with throughout his entire career, the lesser-known but still celebrated Tennessee Three are playing a rare, rare gig in the UK, in London, on the 22nd May.
If you want some music with a lot of history and no little soul, then come feed with me.

East Innit Blud
Having made a brief allusion to this in a previous post I thought I'd fully big this up now that more details have been released about it. Drum roll please....................The East Festival!
This is a six-day event that celebrates, promotes and educates about the creative, multi-cultural, diverse jumble that is East London.
There are 4 main themes across the 6 days which are the Asian Sub-Continent, Travel, Architecture and Minimalism. Hmm, so covering random bases there but some of the events planned across venues including The Barbican, The Rich Mix Gallery, The Whitechapel Gallery and The Bethnal Green Working Men's Club look frickin' awesome and are, invariably, FREE.
And all on many of our doorsteps. By which I obviously mean, my doorstep.

Praying At The Altar of Free
One of London's most beautiful venues, The Union Chapel has been back up and running with renewed vim and vigour, following a temporary hiatus a little while back.
To celebrate this and to open up the space to a whole new audience, they are running free daytime gigs every Saturday, called Daylight Music.
The next instalment of this amazing opportunity sees three exciting new bands to go check out, Gilded Palace of Sin, The Doomed Bird of Providence and City Reverb.
All a bit of a mouthful but hopefully a bit of a handful as well.

The Dawn Chorus part II
The excellently monikered Theo Bard's evening of folk, food and fuel for the soul returns on the 25th February to Passing Clouds.
The Dawn Chorus should be another complete array of good music and good people and what better surroundings could there be for a thursday evening?
Grab the hot toddy while you can...

Musical Smorgasbord
A brief bulletin and indeed chronicle of what I am feeding my ears, brain and soul this week...
Before I Forget - Daisuke Tanabe
Intricate, subtle and beautiful. All the hallmarks of the Japanese aesthetic realised in aural form. With a little measure of icelandic plinkplonk for good measure...
xx - The xx
Probably won't be new to many of you, since the release of their debut album to subtle popular acclaim has meant a certain air of ubiquity. However, this should not detract from the simple elegance and style of this record. If it hasn't entered your sphere as yet, expand your sphere to include it.
Tripper - Efterklang
For me, this is a little bit of an oldie but goodie. This was my own personal soundtrack watching the sun rise over Darjeeling, lighting Kachenjunga with a pinkish hue before revealing its true awesomeness.
Make a new musical memory for yourself with their epic Danish soundscapes.
My Get Up and Go Just Got Up and Went - Ass
One man. One Guitar. Finger-pickin' brilliance. Moving, haunting but won't be put in the corner either. Ass, he's got balls.
Gently - Soft Words Traverse
An audio panarama of an album. Moving through folk, post-rock, electronica and always full of emotion, this instrumental debut from Young Billy Mays should find space to traverse through your consciousness.

Last but not least
This is a recommendation with someone particular in mind so I hope that she is reading. If, alas, she is not, then this is still something that can warm the cockles of any of us who've hopped around to the myriad of Balkan Beats floating around these past couple of years.
The Russian folk festival of Maslenitsa is hitting London this Sunday and will feature a host of performances from Russian groups based both in Russia and the UK.
A week long version of Lent, there will be marionette puppetry, traditional games and, of course, the obligatory efnic food all in the shadow of Tower Bridge and in amongst The Scoop.
Anya, I hope you're getting all this :)
Love to all.

Huzzah!
So, there is blessed news on the cultural battle front! The incredible Shunt are being permitted to remain in the vaults under London Bridge for a further year!
The Theatre Company itself had found alternative premises in a huge, old tobacco factory but have successfully fought to keep the vaults open despite the looming shadow of the ridiculous Shard building which is being plonked on top like some gargantuan, fetid, severed digit upon a deliciously, disguised cake.
This is being viewed as a new project and will be a different kettle of fish to the previous incarnation of the vaults but give their track record should be squeezing out plenty of superb little nuggets.
The new venue for the theatre company is currently running an extended second season of the critically acclaimed production, Money. Taking place in an immense space with part of the intention being one of disorientation, this is not for the feint hearted. Go boldly, soldiers...

Old School
For those of a certain masochistic ilk, and by certain I mean Victorian, the Ragged School Museum has just the thing for you.
The first Sunday of the month offers an opportunity to step back in time and sit in on a Victorian school lesson.
Get schooled, the old school way. Bring you're own cane though if that's your bag...

Celluloid
There are two filmic events this month, one that fulfills an oft-held desire and the other which is particularly close to my heart, being as it stars a friend of mine.
First up, UCL are hosting a rare showing of the original 1916 film of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. A groundbreaking film at the time that wowed crowds with it's special effects and underwater shots, you will also have the opportunity afterwards for a complimentary glass of wine and a meander round the museum.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starring the glamourous and lovely Rachel Stubbings, Can We Talk was nominated for the recent Sundance Film Festival and has been going great guns on the short film circuit.
11 minutes full of sexually-charged comedy, brutal honesty and painful laughs it is fully deserving of it's nomination to Sundance and the Shooting People's award for film of the month.
Nice fucking work, Rachel.
